The Hertfordshire Chamber Orchestra presents a concert of 20th Century French Music at St Mary-At-Hill Church. The programme features Fauré's wistful Masques et Bergamasques, inspired by commedia dell'arte, and Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin, an orchestral commemoration of friends lost in the First World War. The evening also includes Jean Françaix's Dances from "les Malheurs de Sophie", illustrating the escapades of a mischievous child, alongside two significant works by Francis Poulenc: the baroque-influenced Organ Concerto featuring soloist Robert Mingay-Smith, and his emotive 1948 Sinfonietta. The selection explores the contrast between sobriety and pleasure that defined the arts during the first half of the last century.
