Frederic Rzewski: The People United Will Never Be Defeated!
An underground electroacoustic night.
Invalidenstraße 50, 10557 Berlin
The monumental variations cycle 'The People United Will Never Be Defeated!' (1975) by Frederic Rzewski is based on the Chilean protest song 'El pueblo unido, jamás será vencido'. Written by Sergio Ortega for Salvador Allende's Unidad Popular, the song became a global anthem against authoritarian rule after the 1973 coup. This 60-minute masterpiece consists of 36 variations and was originally commissioned for the US Bicentennial. Heather O'Donnell performs this significant work at the Hamburger Bahnhof. A US-born pianist and psychologist now based in Germany, O'Donnell has premiered over 30 works by composers such as John Zorn and Luciano Berio. The performance takes place in the Aktionsraum of the museum in collaboration with Freunde Guter Musik Berlin e.V.
