ROOTS & CULTURE #5 +1ère Partie : Obidaya The Abyssinians is a Jamaican roots reggae group, famous for its vocal harmonies and the promotion of the Rastafarian movement in its lyrics. The vocal trio was originally formed in 1968 by Bernard Collins and Donald Manning. Their first song is named "Satta Massagana", influenced by Carlton Manning's "Happy Land". It is a Rastafarian hymn sung partly in Amharic, the Ethiopian language. Manley Augustus Buchanan, known as Big Youth, is a Jamaican deejay born in 1949 in Trenchtown, Kingston. He established himself in the 1970s as one of the major figures of reggae and toasting. His breakthrough came in 1972 thanks to his collaboration with Augustus 'Gussie' Clarke and the track "The Killer". His album Screaming Target (1973) is today considered a reggae classic.
