Symphonie espagnole
A nostalgic, underground impressionism night.
At the end of the Romantic era, Spain exerted a powerful fascination on French composers. Debussy, Lalo, and Ravel all drew from the rhythms and poetry of the trans-Pyrenean landscapes to enrich their musical language. Édouard Lalo's Symphonie espagnole, premiered in Paris shortly before Carmen, is performed here. Though titled a symphony, it is celebrated today as a violin concerto known for its incandescent and brilliant solo parts. The program also features Ravel's Alborada del gracioso and Rapsodie espagnole, alongside Debussy's Ibéria.
