About Georgian Polyphony
Georgian polyphony is a foundational vocal tradition originating in the Caucasus, distinguished by its ancient three-part harmonic structures and indigenous modal scales. Primarily an a cappella practice, performances occasionally integrate traditional lutes such as the panduri or chonguri to provide rhythmic and melodic punctuation. The genre ranges from slow, solemn liturgical chants to rapid, syncopated work songs and festive table music, characterized by sharp dissonances that resolve into resonant unisons. As a cornerstone of global folk heritage, it maintains a unique semantic position between Eastern Orthodox choral traditions and secular communal storytelling, preceding the formal development of Western classical counterpoint.
