Sound profile
Funk Paulista emerged from the peripheries of São Paulo during the late 1990s as a regional evolution of Rio de Janeiro's funk carioca. It is characterized by its reliance on digital production, utilizing MPC samplers and heavy synthesizers to create aggressive, syncopated rhythms typically ranging between 130 and 140 BPM. The genre transitioned from socially conscious themes to the "ostentação" movement, focusing on themes of wealth and luxury, while maintaining a high-energy, dance-oriented mood. Structurally, it shares rhythmic DNA with Miami bass and freestyle but incorporates distinct Brazilian lyrical flows and slang, making it a pivotal urban expression within South American electronic music.
