About Cuarteto
Originating in Córdoba, Argentina, during the 1940s, Cuarteto is a vibrant genre born from the fusion of Italian tarantella and Spanish pasodoble brought by European immigrants. The sound is defined by its signature "tunga-tunga" rhythm, traditionally driven by a core ensemble of accordion, piano, violin, and double bass, though modern iterations often incorporate brass sections and synthesizers. Characterized by a high-energy, festive mood and a moderate-to-fast tempo, it serves as a cornerstone of Argentine dance culture, sharing a functional and stylistic proximity to tropical genres like cumbia and merengue. This working-class music emphasizes communal celebration and remains a distinctive regional identity marker within the broader Latin American folk-pop landscape.
