Sound profile
Spanish post-punk emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a dark, experimental reaction to the end of the Francoist regime, most notably during the Movida Madrileña. It is characterized by prominent, melodic basslines, jagged guitar riffs often drenched in chorus or delay, and a reliance on both acoustic drums and early synthesizers to create a somber atmosphere. The genre typically maintains a driving, mid-to-fast tempo with syncopated rhythms that bridge the gap between aggressive punk and the moody textures of darkwave. While deeply rooted in British influences like Joy Division, it maintains a unique cultural identity through its politically charged, melancholic lyrics and its foundational role in shaping modern Spanish alternative music.
