An atmospheric, slow-burn animated film.
Three moments in Takaki's life: his relationship with Akari and their forced separation; his friendship with Kanae, who is secretly in love with him; the demands and disappointments of adulthood, an unhappy life in a cold city.

Who are these bland characters and what are they doing moping around these beautifully rendered backgrounds?
Well I'll be damned if this film doesn't pack as much emotion as humanly possibly into its fleeting, sixty minute runtime. It's been a while since an animated/anime film has made me sit there with tears in my eyes throughout almost its entire length, but the sheer poetry, realism and visual beauty of 5 Centimeters Per Second portrays life in a uniquely touching way. If you've ever been in love with someone else but knew, for some reason or some distance, that you couldn't be with them, I urge you to watch this movie; it captures that feeling perfectly. The film is divided into three chapters, each one accentuated by the others, though I can safely say that the first chapter of this film is probably my favorite - it's probably one of my favorite first acts of the last decade, to be honest. There's plenty of wonderful metaphor in here as well, such as the notion that the paths of human beings parallel those of cherry blossoms, falling, drifting apart as time passes. This is certainly not your typical boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-gets-girl-back love story... this is a cinematic poem resulting from a deep sense of melancholy and understanding of the world, the hardships that humans face through their interpersonal relationships. An extraordinarily work of art.
It follows three distinct chapters in the life of a young man named Takaki as he deals with physical separation from a childhood friend, unrequited affection from another, and the lingering weight of nostalgia into adulthood.
It was directed by Makoto Shinkai in 2007, known for his atmospheric storytelling and detailed background art in Japanese cinema.
It won the award for Best Animated Feature Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in 2007.
