TIFF 2026 #1: Centrepiece (North American Premiere)Captures one of the most painful parts about growing up a bit too well: it's very lonely. Though I think the fact it's all embodied through someone as young as the titular Ah Girl only makes watching this film feel sadder. Though that's also the mark of a confident filmmaker who's ready to make waves. Given that this film is the feature directorial debut of Ang Geck Geck Priscilla, what first strikes me about Ah Girl is how she captures the world through a child's eyes. It's never easy to understand the adults around her, but that's how we retain these memories of growing up. Ang Geck Geck Priscilla isn't observing this lens with nostalgia, but a better sense of where she is now – versus what she had thought in the past. It's very moving, but I think what's most stunning about Ah Girl is the way that Ang Geck Geck Priscilla directs her child performers. And there's a great sense of empathy for everything that they go through as they prepare to move from one phase of life to the next. It's not easy, sometimes it might be painful, but that's how we start to familiarize ourselves with the way that the world can run.
