I have given this half a star but I want to be absolutely clear at the outset: I sometimes write a review without assigning a star rating to a film because of a complicating factor about the film that renders stars not particularly useful, so consider half a star the lowest rating I can give because this is the worst film I have ever seen. It's incredibly ugly, full of janky ai and bad compositing, but its also unbelievably crass and tasteless, and relentless in its fetishisation of the injuries of children. Nominally to drive the revenge plotline but there's no catharsis in watching Xi La blowing away caricatures of western pedophiles who die with horrible cgi bloodspurts after spouting Neil Breen dialogue. It's worse than a Breen film as it feels more exploitative and doesn't have the kind of purity of vision of one madman doing it all himself. And The fighting isn't even good. I wouldn't subject even someone I really didn't like to this. My theory that Chinese action cinema slaps, and that they only send us the good stuff, lies shattered and broken at my feet. If I ever meet Mark Ma im gonna give him a piece of my mind. I hate this movie.
There was no need for this to be made. There are no redeeming features. The A.I. slop is unwatchable. The music throughout is like if an upstairs neighbor was killing someone to techno. Every aspect is handled poorly. I am genuinely concerned that this might have been made for a very specific and arrestable audience.
