Grief will never not be an ideal vessel for genre tellings, pairing as the conversation piece with horrors of the past and inquisitive heeds of present/future, and when it’s bound to a plastic case harboring hours/years of footage, it’s off to the races, but when it’s thrown into hand-holding exposition dumps and a jump-scare apocalypse that water down its swing at conjuring a fresh realm of entity spawns, eye rolls are a default, and the seriousness shifts towards a stretched-thin gimmick swimming in disinterest—way too long, and the buildup mismatches payoff so horribly its strive to unwind the preordained culminating layers just doesn’t work and flails into an accidental absurdity eons displaced from whatever geometric mesmerization it aims for.2020s
