The Green Slime

A giant asteroid is heading toward Earth so some astronauts disembark from a nearby space station to blow it up. The mission is successful, and they return to the station unknowingly bringing back a gooey green substance that mutates into one-eyed tentacled monsters that feed off electricity. Soon the station is crawling with them, and people are being zapped left and right!

My 2000th review. Let’s get nostalgic. When I was a kid growing up in northern New Jersey, one of our family television staples was channel 7’s (ABC) “4:30 Movie”. As I recall, their lineups often featured sci-fi and horror, and each week had a theme. Monster weeks were a staple, but they’d run (for example) a week of Vincent Price, a week of Planet of The Apes, and yep, a week of Sci-Fi. This is where I consumed a vast portion of weird cinema, including The Green Slime. This one’s special because it feels 100% like a Godzilla production but in fact it’s 50% - Toei of Japan provided the crew and US studio MGM the American cast. That means you get the best of both worlds: those signature Toei miniatures and rubber monsters infused with the swagger of American actors Richard Jaeckel and Robert Horton. The story is a simple “aliens on a space station” tale, where these Americans (and one Italian woman) must find a way to stop a rapidly reproducing, squealing, tentacled rubber alien horde.Worth watching for the funky opening and closing theme song!

60th Review for The Collab Weekly Movie WatchA Japanese-directed and -produced B monster movie that stars non-Japanese actors and is as conventional as it gets from the beginning to the end, to the point where, if you've watched one of these movies, you've probably already seen this one, so to speak. It reminded me a lot of The Forbidden Planet and the crab movie by Roger Corman. If there's one thing that stands out in this movie, it's the monster's appearance and the distinctive (and obnoxious) noise it makes when it attacks. And there's a certain allure to these movies that's hard to dismiss - even when its quality and storytelling try hard to do otherwise. All in all, it's not as horrible as its reputation suggests for a picture that has supposedly been synonymous with the worst of the worst in the genre, getting its own award similar to the Razzies but for science fiction and serving as the pilot for MST3K.TODAY SCHEDULEThe Green SlimeA Warning to the CuriousThe Autopsy of Jane DoeThe Woman King

The poster and theme song are both an A+. Too bad the actual movie is a C-. I loved the very meatball-like asteroid though, and that space station party was pretty swinging! 💃🕺
