Noirvember 2025Prompt 5: Eastern Block NoirA beautifully made piece of manipulative post war propaganda. The ex-German soldier is portrayed through a compassionate lens, blameless, even! When he’s kind of barely likable.Gorgeous cinematography, because living in the rubble of a once thriving city isn’t destruction, it’s a new beginning.😑The character Suzanne is presented as having no needs at all. She looks amazing after being released from a concentration camp, is in good health & gets right back to work keeping house & making drawings (before being imprisoned she was an illustrator, so I’m assuming her job was left open, until she could return?). She permits the German ex-soldier squatting in her old apartment to stay & immediately accepts this destroyer of her people AND takes care of him!!!WTF?!!!When he (the ex-soldier Hans) rambles on about the awfulness of war & how hard life has been for him, the Jewish people’s own holocaust experience is completely dismissed in that moment… & my jaw was on the floor. I mean I know it must have been horrible if someone was German & had to fight for Germany if they didn’t believe in the cause - but it’s never worse than being in a concentration camp. It’s just not.The film is filled with dysfunctional storylines… later on, when Suzanne & Hans are in a romantic relationship, Suzanne mentions how Hans never talks about his past, and he gives some answer about how only now matters and she’s like oh of course why would I need to know anything else about you how silly of me.😑The thing is, according to the plot, the “murderers among us” doesn’t refer to Hans, but instead his old Commander Brueckner… of course the storyline implies that Hans should not take the law into his own hands & kill Brueckner, but let the law play out justice itself! Because the law IS just. The end.🤮
After returning from a concentration camp, a survivor finds a traumatized former soldier living in her apartment in ruins-strewn Berlin, and together they confront the psychological weight of World War II.
