me when it’s 1381 and i’m a priest with a low taper fade
A movie that almost seems like it doesn’t believe in itself, to the point of almost ruining itself. The story is interesting and the message is current and impactful, even if it’s a little too didactic but the problem is that the movie makes itself heavier with too many exaggerated visual and directing choices. You can’t spend two hours watching the camera shake like in an episode of The Office, you can’t have a constant, incredibly loud noise in the background that makes it hard to understand half of the dialogue, and you can’t keep repeating the same ideas for so long, only to rush through the ending. The movie is still pretty good overall and I wasn’t bored, but it had a strong idea and it should have let that idea speak for itself instead of covering it with so many unnecessary things.
The film follows Wat Tyler as he mobilizes a peasant rebellion in 14th-century England amidst war, plague, and oppressive royal taxation.
Paul Greengrass, a British filmmaker known for his kinetic, documentary-style approach to high-stakes narratives, directed the film in 2026.
