On an interstellar journey, a group of scientists studies the last living vestiges of Earth. The artificial intelligence, Museo, becomes a portal to the crew’s diaries and a fragmented archive of humanity. On Earth, the one believed to be the last of the humans traverses a ruined planet that is slowly recovering, little by little, from the apocalypse it endured.

sort of an extended Baudrillard riff that’s been done endlessly. The slow cinema stuff in it feels undeveloped, especially the final shot. What are we doing here, guys? I talked to Jacob Gregor about it after and he made me appreciate it a bit more where he was talking about how it allowed him to totally disengage and think about his own work, and I realized I did the same thing during it. I liked being given the luxury of disengaging.
Leonardo Pirondi’s debut feature Tropicais Fractais isn’t your conventional sci-fi epic. There is a spaceship, a futuristic bio-dome-like built environment, AI-powered supercomputers, and the impending end of the world, but you won’t find his film in a multiplex. (It has its U.S. premiere this weekend at the Chicago Underground Film Festival, whose films aren’t exactly multiplex-friendly.) CUFFLoved this so much. What does it mean for being to disclose itself in ‘artificial’ spaces? What does disclosure mean in general? It also makes a point about the politics of disclosure, that Being’s ability to disclose gives it a certain power that human techne cannot overcome. Memory itself becomes thid precarious thing that we have far less control over than we desire, memory is what makes us finite despite all our attempts to transcend it. These are far from new things but this movie just does everything extremely well for me.
