A visual journey through the vastness of the Soviet Union, composed exclusively of archival footage shot between 1970 and 1973 by a group of Italian filmmakers. From the nomadic encampments of Central Asia to Red Square, from remote villages in the Caucasus to the far reaches of the Far East, the film reveals a mosaic of cultures that the regime sought to homogenize.

tender piece of film archeology, reminds me of the stories my parents told me growing up… so many long shots in this that the film gave me a lot of time to be in my head and revisit those moments; the shot of the man who was fishing in the winter dropped his hand into sub zero temp water to grab a fish (lol) reminded me of how my mother would always touch the fireplace/oven to reach things and me and my siblings would be so gagged (we could barely get close without the heat being too much) and she’d be like I grew up in the village, this is no problem to me! But the whole doc just felt very familiar to me, like a lullaby lost to time, especially since there’s a lullaby in this that i haven’t heard since i was a kid 😴😲
When one has such captivating archival footage from all corners of the Soviet Union, one can have confidence to remain completely silent, allowing the camera to observe rather than explain. Loznitsa does exactly that.
