PPJ
Franco-Brazilian duo PPJ refuse to be bound by geography or genre, melding elements of baile funk and samba from singer Páula's native Brazil with techno, electroclash and hyper pop more commonly found this side of the Atlantic. Whether it's a traditional cuíca side by side with a pounding kick drum, or subtle bossa nova acoustic guitar interspersed with UK-inspired techno rhythms, this is a group that transverses continents and resists being pinned down. And it's this protean, playful energy that they bring to new release “Bus Stop,” a collaboration with big beat pioneer Fatboy Slim out September 7th on his imprint Southern Fried Records. Embracing “the fun side of the dark side,” PPJ have in Páula a frontwoman whose smile and dynamism can light up the darkest room, her voice undulating between sass and airy sweet. Behind the decks is hotly-tipped producer Povoa, whose solo work has found frequent favour with the likes of Ben UFO, Chloe Robinson, Tsha, DJ ADHD and Four Tet in recent months. Together, they form a unique, tantalising proposition – equally at home on summer afternoon festival main stages as they are in the early hours in the underbelly of Berghain. Founding member Jerge may have recently departed the group, but PPJ remain as playful and unpredictable as ever. All aboard.
