David Duchovny
David Duchovny has spent the last decade steadily building a body of work as a songwriter and recording artist, working with a small and dedicated group of musicians and friends. On Prince of Pieces, his upcoming fourth studio album, that dedication and those longtime relationships come together to create his most cohesive, collaborative and intimate work yet. Pieces is both a comfortable return to form and an evolution in the band’s sound. The band is quick to credit the cohesiveness of the record to several days of writing and recording demos that took place in David’s place in California. While there is a live, organic feel to the record, it also maintains an ambitious nature. “The arrangements of the songs have always been in service of either the groove or the emotion,” says Duchovny. “It’s case by case. I like to try to find sounds that fill the space above the melody, like horns or bells or harmonies as well as trying to find or inspire cool beats.” While the music’s evolved, Duchovny has maintained a pretty steadfast opinion of his musical output. “I don’t know how I’ve changed musically,” he admits. “The songs have always been about love, loss, hope and perseverance, and I imagine they always will be.”
