Childhood leaves us piece by piece. The loss of innocence and familiar comfort that comes with growing older rarely happens in a straight line, more as a slow dissolving of the things and places that defined your early years. For Giant Killer Bats – aka Los Angeles songwriter McCoy Kirgo – having to leave the house he grew up in and lived in for 17 years in late 2020 signaled one of these seismic shifts, and the sudden absence of one of the pillars of his childhood. On his new self-titled EP and first under the new moniker, he presents some of the final recordings made in his home studio in the house, a five-song collection tracking the ups and downs of youth, stories of romance and heartbreak, and the fantastical fictional tales he weaved to escape from this real-life turmoil. It stands as a final documentation of these years, before he takes a firm step forward. The first offering of this debut body of work, "Berlin," is out now via Terrible Records' Flexible Distribution.
