Founded by Gerhard Vohwinkel at the request of restaurateur Hermann Kügler, initially under the name Allotria Stompers, the band began performing as the house band at the Allotria jazz club in Munich’s Maxvorstadt district. Until the mid-1980s, the Podium in Schwabing served as their regular weekly venue. As early as spring 1970, the octet performed in the main concert programme of the Jazz Festival in Burghausen. In the same year, the band won first prize at the festival in Dinslaken. Shortly afterwards, the group signed a record deal with Ariola, later followed by Bellaphon. In 1972, the band made a guest appearance in episode 48, Toter gesucht, of the German television crime series Der Kommissar. From 1983 onwards, the band released its albums through Turicaphon AG on the Elite Special label. In addition, the band performed an annual New Year’s concert at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz and later at the Künstlerhaus am Lenbachplatz. Their tours took the musicians throughout Europe and, from 1981 onwards, also across North America.
