Wrexham-born, London-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Art School Girlfriend has established herself as a master of the sonic space that realises electronica through a songwriter, shoegazer and queer lens. Mackey speaks of making her third record, Lean In whilst feeling ‘a lot of things in parallel: grief, joy, love, anxiety, hopelessness, hopefulness, age, capitalism, technology’. Lean In contains an electronic-organic hybridity and unparalleled production born from time, expertise and a ‘studio of one’s own’. Since releasing her first EPs in 2017, Art School Girlfriend has established a cult following for her gauzy productions and impressive live shows; her albums Is It Light Where You Are (2021) and Soft Landing (2023) were acclaimed for how they deftly painted emotions with sound. With music that reveals its depths and details over years of listening, Lean In arrives at a time where her audience has grown, partly due to her diverse involvement across the music scene at large, whether it's contributing to the work of others (Lane 8, 1-800 Girls, Jasper Tygner, Ghostpoet, Pencil) being chosen by Bonobo to DJ at his Outliers series at Drumsheds and Mixmag Lab; touring the US with The Japanese House and Marika Hackman; a notable DJ set for HOR; lecturing in sound design and production at UAL or the tastemaker curation of her radio show on Foundation FM.
