Billet Doux

There are flames that consume, and others that warm the heart. The cosmic pop-rock of Billet Doux has the power to soothe hearts and set a concert hall ablaze with the very same riff. The title of their first upcoming album, Superbloom is here again, sets the tone: that of an explosion of flowers that appears after heavy rain in the deserts of Southern California — the “superblooms.” It reflects the narrative thread that ties all their songs together: the possibility of a joyful rebirth in the midst of chaos. They were born and grew up in France but were raised on Californian punk, rock, folk, and delicious indie-pop, from the Red Hots, Blink-182, to The Dø and Kings of Leon. The duo is tuned to the same frequency and composes like a rock band — just the two of them: a riff from Pierre on bass or guitar, a drum pattern to set the energy, and Kaycie begins to shape the melody… The songs burst forth. A liberating, powerful, euphoric energy — never naïve — to purge what runs deep within them. What was meant to be a feature on their solo projects becomes a commitment, sealed by the couple on a street in Amsterdam: this will be a band. With a name pronounced in French : Billet Doux. For production, they had one clear idea: Olivia Merilahti, the female half of The Dø, a band they listened to obsessively. They send her demos via Instagram, and she agrees. The perfect match continues in a studio in the South-West of France, where they sculpt the sound of Billet Doux.
