A nostalgic, underground country blues artist.
Birds Flying Backwards are a London-based six-piece formed by childhood friends and family of principal songwriter JR Sanders. Their sound is eclectic, shifting fluidly from alt-folk (as heard on One Heartbreak to Another) to droning psychedelia (Who Are We?) and left-field spiritual jazz (2024’s Surrender to The Void II). The common thread that connects their sound is Sanders’ heartfelt lyricism and Joe and India’s 'radiant intertwining vocals' (Atwood Magazine, 2025). The band gained attention in 2024 while touring with The Hanging Stars for their 'genre defying live performance' and with the release of their ambitious debut EP Surrender to The Void, which earned them praise as ‘one of the best new psych bands in London’ (Still Listening Magazine, 2024). Following the release of Surrender to The Void, 2025 has seen them explore a more folk-oriented direction, all while further solidifying their reputation as the ‘purveyors of nostalgic, yet timeless rock reverie’ (Atwood Magazine). Their first full-length album, Lovebirds, is slated for release on 11th March 2026.
