A nostalgic, polished baroque artist.
I see my job as a calling; even when, which is more of an exception, I am not singing a Bach evangelist, but a frivolous 20s hit penned by Friedrich Holländer. I can lead a very happy life — being able to bathe in 500 years of music history, I am allowed to jump from the early church a-cappella sequence to Henri Duparc's “L’invitation au voyage”, I can switch between Belmonte and Belshazzar, between Britten and Brahms. Sometimes rediscovery, sometimes commission. Duo evenings with Dorothee Mields, entwined with a delicate theorbo continuo, are just as much a part of my life as it is lush melodrama by Engelbert Humperdinck. The whole world of the oratorio, from the quartet cantata to Hermann Suter’s “Le Laudi” ... Contrasting styles of interpretation, both mountain chapel and Tokyo International Forum, sometimes baroque theater, sometimes open air. Best things are the friendships, cultivated in rehearsals and performances, the annual rituals of getting together, at the festivals, at the cycles — but also in “day-to-day business.” And these friendships also include a lot of people who sit across from me in churches, concert halls and theaters: people who come into my life as spontaneously as the orchestra that I’m a guest of for the first time; People who have lovingly accompanied my career since the beginning.
