Gerard Toal is a folk-rooted, classically-trained multi-instrumentalist from Mullingar, Ireland, now based in Madrid. Blending the lyrical intimacy of singer-songwriters like Rufus Wainwright and Joanna Newsom with the emotional sweep of artists like Anohni and Björk, his music explores queer identity through a rural lens — tender, vivid, and defiantly personal. With a background as a sought-after cellist collaborating with a range of artists, Gerard is now stepping into his own voice. His debut EP, released in 2025, introduces his signature sound: layered strings, piano and guitar, woven together with poetic storytelling and a haunting vocal style. It's folk — but queerer, softer, and stranger. An album is due later this year.
