An underground indie folk artist.
Jess McAvoy (they/them) is a non‑binary Australian singer-songwriter, performance artist and voice educator currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Jess began writing and playing guitar as a preteen, launching their own indie label, Henduwin Music, by age 14. Their prolific, independent career has blossomed across three decades, spanning an impressive 15 self-funded and self‑produced studio projects since the early 1990s. Their discography reflects a deeply personal and genre-defying journey—from folk and indie to blues, rock, and introspective pop. Early praise came with Into the Dark (2006), hailed by Beat Magazine as a “beautiful release” capturing “that wonderful frayed beauty in [their] voice” ...followed by the critically acclaimed As the Sun Falls (2008), featuring cult favorite “The Sailor” After relocating to North America in 2011, Jess continued to expand their artistic reach. In 2023 they premiered The Search, a one-person rock musical staged at The Tank in Manhattan, later performed at Melbourne’s Butterfly Club during Midsumma Festival and at Brooklyn’s 3 Dollar Bill in early 2024 to critical acclaim. Their most recent album, American Dreaming (2024), marks a dynamic milestone—Jess’s 15th studio release—crafted in collaboration with multi-Grammy Award–winning producer Tre Nagella. The record blends raw rock spirit with lush, heartrending songwriting, earning fresh acclaim for its emotional depth and sonic scope.
