João Barreto Trio is a recent project by the young pianist and composer João Barreto. The group performs mainly original compositions, alongside arrangements of traditional Portuguese songs. The Trio has developed a distinctive lyrical language, with a constant dialogue between Classical music, European jazz and improvised music, while maintaining a strong connection to the identity of Portuguese folk songs, in an organic and song-like approach. The trio features Duarte Júlio on double bass and João Araújo on drums, taking inspiration from artists such as Avishai Cohen, Brad Mehldau, Esbjörn Svensson, Mário Laginha and Keith Jarrett Trio. In October 2026, the group releases its debut album, Travessia, alongside a concert schedule that includes renowned venues such as Casa da Música and Teatro Rivoli (Porto), In the Mood (Bulgaria), Doo-Bop Club (Finland) and Jamboree (Spain).
