Madre Cumbia

Madre Cumbia is a historic collaboration between Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, Fruko, and Carmelo Torres—three pillars who embody the origin, transformation, and living continuity of Colombian cumbia. Latin Grammy Award-winning Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto preserve the ancestral Afro-Indigenous dialogue of gaitas, drums, and voice that has defined cumbia for generations. Legendary bassist, arranger, and producer Fruko electrified Colombian tropical music, shaping its modern sound through his work with Fruko y Sus Tesos, La Sonora Dinamita, Joe Arroyo, Wganda Kenya, Afro Sound, and many others. Latin Grammy-nominated accordionist Carmelo Torres, a direct heir to the tradition of Andrés Landero, carries forward the deeply rhythmic sound of cumbia sabanera from Colombia’s Caribbean plains. Together, these musicians represent nearly every chapter of cumbia’s evolution from its ceremonial roots and rural accordion traditions to its electrification and worldwide expansion. More than an album, Madre Cumbia is a gathering of the artists who have preserved, transformed, and carried one of Latin America’s most important musical traditions across generations.
