Mark Lotz is a German flutist, composer, and improviser whose work unfolds at the edges of jazz, contemporary music, and global traditions. Praised by Los Angeles Jazz Scene Magazine as “one of the world’s top jazz flute players,” he has built an international practice driven by curiosity and exploration. His music moves between solo performance, free improvisation, cinematic jazz, and projects rooted in Afro-Cuban religious music, West African traditions, and Indian-influenced forms. Other collaborations intersect with theater, film, dance, performance art, and visual arts. Lotz has appeared on over 70 recordings and released 21 albums as a leader. His debut Puasong Daffriek (1994) drew early attention for its unconventional imagination. In 2025, he founded his own label, Sonic Squid Music. Now based in the Netherlands, Lotz maintains an intense schedule as a soloist, bandleader, composer, producer, curator and educator at the Utrecht and Rotterdam Conservatories. Press responses : All About Jazz wrote that “Mark Alban Lotz is bringing sexy back into jazz,” JazzMo called him a “Monomaniacally driven musician,” and France’s CultureJazz noted, “This is a musician who makes no compromises.” His recent release, Freshta, dedicated to the memory of Afghan women’s rights activist Freshta Kohistani, Lotz is reaffirming his status as a soloist, and composer in contemporary jazz who transcends borders and use music as a powerful a tool to change and celebrate life through music.
