Phillip Doc Martin

Phillip “Doc” Martin really is a doctor -- a dentist with a private practice – but has equally impressive musical creds. Growing up in South Florida, he started playing the saxophone at the age of 9. He continued to play all the way through high school where he became first chair in the All-State Jazz Band. Doc Martin received a scholarship to study music at the University of Central Florida under the leadership of Jeff Rupert and George Weremchuk and was quickly hired as a sideman by Sam Rivers and Sisaundra Lewis. After graduation, Doc Martin experienced the hardships that full time musicians often experience. He was short on money and was struggling to make a living. Based on a strong recommendation from his father, he decided to pursue a career in dentistry(His father and brother are dentists). Doc Martin got accepted into the prestigious dental program at Howard University and became a Board Certified Dentist in 2008. During Dental School, he managed to still tour while getting signed to Marcus Johnson's record label Three Keys Music where he released Pride and Joy and Realization. During the pandemic in 2019, Doc met bassist Jacob Webb and was signed to his record label Next Paradigm. Since then, Doc has recorded and collaborated with many artists including Kirk Whalum , Walter Beasley , Paul Brown, Vandell Andrew , Steve Oliver , and Ilya Serov. Doc owns a successful private dental practice in Bowie, Maryland, and tours extensively with his band.
