Poppy Ajudha
Poppy Ajudha has realised the power of being vulnerable within her music. Making her upcoming self-titled sophomore album, Poppy, was a cathartic personal journey of letting go. Not caring anymore about what or who holds her back, not being afraid to confront her demons, and most importantly, not being afraid to finally put herself first. The singer songwriter felt like she had “something to prove” with her critically acclaimed 2022 debut album THE POWER IN US. Constructed during lockdown, the album spoke on the chaos of the world, with socially-charged songs on the intersectionality of race, gender, and sexuality. Singles included ‘PLAYGOD’ tackling abortion rights; ‘LONDON’S BURNING’ a trippy ballad exploring the legacy of British colonialism; and rebellious punk-inspired ‘NO!’ which sees Poppy advocate for one’s autonomy. “That album is not going anywhere,” says Poppy, “and I still stand for those things and will continue to talk about the issues I care about.” Born in South East London to a British mother and St Lucia-born father, Poppy was surrounded by music. Her father owned a nightclub, which exposed Ajudha to a variety of genres, while her mother introduced her British female icons such as Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Lily Allen.
