Reverend Doctor is alternative-funk used like a soothing balm on the wounds we’ve inflicted on one another. Reverend (to preach), Doctor (to heal) brings together pop, soul, and rock, intentionally putting them into a pot and applying heat to taste. Out come songs about desire, belonging, self-acceptance, and the stubborn work of caring for one another. Born in the heartland and now based in Long Beach, California, Rev makes music less interested in having all the answers than in making room for people to show up as they are. That idea carries onto the stage. Whether solo or with a full band, the scale changes; the purpose doesn’t: to carry the things that burden each of us, together. That approach has taken Reverend Doctor from intimate rooms to major stages and events for clients including Disney, Ferrari, and FIFA, while the songwriting underneath the show continues to earn recognition of its own. “My Affection,” a meditation on desire and the value of human connection, was named a finalist in the Great American Song Contest. Reverend Doctor treats joy in their music as something worth protecting: a way of resisting isolation, cynicism, and the pressure to make ourselves smaller. The songs make space for tenderness without embarrassment, celebration without denial, and the reminder that we were meant to gather around the fire at night with others. So come as you are.
