A nostalgic, polished opera artist.
Riccardo Muti is one of the greatest conductors in the history of music. After 13 years as Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (2010–2023), he became the only conductor in the orchestra’s history to be named Music Director Emeritus for Life. Since 1971, his artistic partnership with the Wiener Philharmoniker has been the longest in the orchestra’s history. He has conducted the orchestra’s prestigious New Year Concert in Vienna’s Goldener Saal 7 times. Music Director of Teatro alla Scala from 1986 to 2004, Muti held the longest continuous tenure in the theatre’s history. He also served as Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra (1980–1992), London’s Philharmonia Orchestra (1972–1982) and Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (1967–1980). He regularly conducts the world’s leading orchestras, including Berliner Philharmoniker, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Orchestre National de France and New York Philharmonic. His artistic activity spans more than 300 years of music and embraces an exceptionally broad spectrum of composers and styles, from opera to symphonic music. Alongside the established masterpieces, he has revived neglected and rarely performed works, both in performance and through an extensive, award-winning discography. Widely regarded as the leading contemporary interpreter of Italian opera, particularly the works of Giuseppe Verdi, he was recently described by The New York Times as “The King of Verdi”. @www.riccardomutimusic.com
