An underground, raw art punk artist.
Rip Florence is an Oakland/Santa Cruz-based outsider/art punk singer-songwriter whose music blends Syd Barrett’s freak folk whimsy, Olivia Tremor Control’s lo-fi maximalism, Jonathan Richman’s storytelling, and Beat Happening’s art-rock edge. In the past, he’s played as Daniel Johnston’s guitarist, opened for acts such as King Tuff, Magik Markers, and Peter Stampfel; toured internationally, and shares the sounds of lo-fi, esoteric, weirdo artists via diy micro-label, Shallow Dive Records. His last full-length, 'Berlin Bloos!', was a collection of demos recorded at Dr. Rudy’s flat in Pankow while isolating with Covid. The record emotes dystopian, digital folk themes via acoustic guitars, bedridden sniffly vocals, and iPhone overdubs. Currently, he’s working on a full-length record with the imaginary (but very real band), ‘MOTEL art!’, as well as a benefit record featuring the voices & experiences of unhoused individuals accompanied by thematic sound art collages - with proceeds supporting Santa Cruz County housing advocacy groups. Rip’s music is a raw, genuine exploration of lo-fi art and unconventional creativity. His ethos reflects a yearning to continually intersect counter-hegemony with creativity, and anti-hierarchy praxis. WEBSITE: ripflorence.net // EMAIL: [email protected]
