I trained on classical sitar as a teenager in Calcutta, India, under the tutelage of Sri Deepak Choudhuri, the pre-eminent disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. Over the past decade, I've made a departure from the formal, classical tradition into contemporary Western music, as well as Bollywood songs. Having been born and raised in the US, but trained in music in India, the orchestration and interpretation of popular cover songs results in an authentic, powerful, cross-cultural musical experience that transcends borders and genre. Indian face, American story. Super-chill, very uplifting and engaging, never boring or obtrusive. In the past 3 years, I've been featured on Katy Perry's most recent album, and Ziggy Marley's most recent album, and I've performed at the Hollywood Bowl as a special guest of the Blue Man Group.
Ronobir Lahiri plays a fusion of classical Indian sitar with contemporary Western pop, electronic, and Bollywood influences, creating a cross-cultural sound.
