Folks, it's SAILOR BOYFRIEND: a late stage, synthrock outfit that Andy Waldron (he/him) wears, sewn together with guitarist Alex Mercuri (he/him) (Pom Pom Squad, Long Neck) in Jersey City in 2016. Their two albums, three different EPs, and variety of compilation appearances cumulatively sound like if Brandon Flowers dropped The Book of Mormon and picked up The Phantom Tollbooth. Across sixty plus gigs sharing bills with the likes of Water From Your Eyes, Ike Ufomadu, Grace Ives, River L. Ramirez, Porches and more, Sailor Boyfriend's delightfully confrontational live act boasts a mesh of performance art, shtick, and rock and roll moves – having graced public access television, monthly drag variety nights, and countless DIY spaces that don’t exist anymore out of reasons good and bad. Andy is currently working on a third album about wavering faith in music and labor, Worksong (due sometime in 2024), at his Brooklyn apartment and continuing to bear the oddly specific deal the devil has gifted him in exchange for not being able to process dairy: a musical prowess described as a "tone [existing] somewhere between sincerity and absurdity" (Various Small Flames), making "space [to] dance ourselves clean of fatalism, even if for one fleeting moment" (THE DELI), and akin to "an arcade on a giant hover board [flown] to Antarctica" (SMALL ALBUMS).
