An underground vocal jazz artist.
Sarah Thorpe is a French-British jazz vocalist, composer and arranger, known for her moving blend of groove and emotion. With her warm tone, authenticity and inspired song choices, she has crafted a voice that is instantly recognizable. Raised in Paris, with close ties to Yorkshire, she studied philosophy while training at the Bill Evans Piano Academy in Paris with Sara Lazarus and later Michele Hendricks. She has performed widely in Paris and London, sharing the stage with Alain Jean-Marie, Jason Marsalis, Hugo Lippi, Darryl Hall, Ronald Baker, Olivier Hutman and Talib Kibwe (former musical director for Randy Weston). Her music weaves contemporary grooves with modern jazz standards, drawing inspiration from Roy Hargrove, Erykah Badu, Carmen Lundy and Abbey Lincoln. As a songwriter, she is unafraid of bare and emotional material, while also bringing a fresh voice to works by Wayne Shorter, Bob Dylan and more. Following Never Leave Me (2015) and Deep Blue Love (2020), her third album, Secret Place (2026), reveals a mature and deeply personal side of her artistry. Recognized as an original voice, she has been described by Jean-Michel Proust (president of the Académie du Jazz) as a singer whose approach is “as natural as possible… with authenticity, her focus is to make the melody meet the groove. She delivers songs with a universal reach, presenting impeccable musicianship and perfect command of purpose.”
