An underground indie rock act from the local scene.
Shady Bug have mastered the art of juxtaposition. Initially emerging in late 2016 from the St. Louis, Missouri DIY music scene, the band has long been interested in creative contrast. Comprised of vocalist/guitarist, Hannah Rainey; guitarist/vocalist Ripple; bassist Christ Chartrand; and now Gram Tolish on drums. From the start, one of their most defining features has undoubtedly been their ability to weave playfully somber lyricism through gritty, fuzzy riffs with ease. Don’t get it twisted though; Shady Bug are not trying to make anything seem effortless. On their latest LP, we find the band figuring out new ways to work together. Pulling from early 2024 demos, a previous album concept that had been entirely scrapped, and 8 months of weekly group live sessions. The result is I wanted to be there, a self-described blend of “happy accidents and diligent sculpting.” The album is truly a love letter to both collaboration and learning to protect one another’s agency. For Shady Bug, making music is about connection and care; a sentiment that shines throughout all of their work, but particularly so on this new record. - Delaney Motter
