A modern sensibility has been added to the Jewish music tradition by Seattle-based multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter Shawn Weaver. As the leader of Shawn's Kugel, a band he formed with keyboardist/accordion player Steve Rice, bassist Spencer Hoveskeland, and drummer/percussionist Will Dowd in 1996, Weaver has successfully fused klezmer music with pop and rock influences. Weaver first attracted attention as a member of the irreverent klezmer/Jewish folk band the Mazletones. The group, which introduced such ditties as "Seattle, Seattle" and "Borscht Rider in the Sky," performed its final show, at the Temple Beth Am's Kleg Festival in Seattle, on November 8, 1998.
