Surgent

Surgent is a progressive death metal band born from the depths of Estonia’s underground scene, blending the brutality of death metal with groove, progressive elements, and genre-defying experimentation. Musically, Surgent draws from a wide range of influences— both expected and unconventional. Core inspiration comes from metal giants like Pantera, Death, Opeth, Strapping Young Lad, Gojira, Meshuggah, Scarve, and Extol. But the band isn’t afraid to experiment: their self-titled debut album (2022) features bold stylistic detours, from tribal rhythms to hints of bossa nova. This creative daring earned them critical acclaim, culminating in the album being named Estonian Metal Album of the Year 2023. Now, Surgent turns their focus to their second full-length album, currently in pre-production. While still heavy, complex, and unafraid to challenge listeners, the new material is more focused and cohesive, except for one relentless 2-minute grind assault and another post-black metal-inspired epicness, occasionally driven by polyrhythmic Meshuggah-style grooves. At its core, the new album stays true to Surgent’s defining principles: instrumental precision, sonic depth, and above all, uncompromising listenability. With a sharper vision and a reinforced lineup, Surgent is ready to surge forward into their next chapter—louder, smarter, and heavier than ever.
