אורי בנאי הוא נצר למשפחת בנאי - בנו של גברי בנאי החל את דרכו בעולם המשחק בגיל צעיר, כששיחק כילד בסדרת הטלוויזיה לילדים “רגע עם דודלי” . בין השנים 1986–1987 היה חבר בלהקת צעירי תל אביב. בצה“ל שירת בלהקת פיקוד מרכז. בין השנים 1994–1995 למד משחק במכון לי סטרסברג לתיאטרון ולקולנוע בניו יורק. לאחר מכן כיכב בסדרות הטלוויזיה "עניין של זמן", "פלורנטין" ועוד.
