WAAN
At the beginning of 2023, saxophonist Bart Wirtz and keyboardist Emiel van Rijthoven introduced their new band WAAN, showcasing their musical synergy. WAAN's music is raw and energetic, born from an exploration of blending diverse worlds. It’s a fusion of electronically driven grooves, atmospherically composed melodies, and an eclectic mix of energetic dance, pop, roots, and jazz funk. WAAN’s core live lineup, alongside Wirtz and Van Rijthoven, features Matteo Mazzù on bass and Mark Schilders on drums. In the studio, WAAN is assisted by Oscar de Jong (Kraak & Smaak). The debut album Echo Echo was released in February 2023 on the German label Sonar Kollektiv. It received two nominations for the prestigious Edison Jazz Awards that year and was met with widespread acclaim. In June 2024, WAAN released a live EP. The recordings capture the interplay between acoustic and electronic music in a live setting, where Schilders’ subtly applied computerized sounds seamlessly blend with the warm keyboards and saxophones of Bart and Emiel, along with Matteo’s transitions between acoustic and synth bass. WAAN is currently working on a new studio album set to release in January 2026. Before then, audiences can expect a sneak peek with a few singles. Anticipate an energetic blend of improvised music with pop appeal and the vibrant energy of EDM.
