Yaz Lancaster
A queer, homegrown classical artist.
Yaz Lancaster grants themselves permission to do it all. Their expansive practice encompasses experimental electroacoustic performances, notated compositions, post-genre DJ-ing, music writing, steel pan, collage-based poetry, collaborative work, and organizing DIY shows across New York City’s underground and nightlife scenes. Their solo project comprises songs, improvisations, and written works performed with violin, voice, and synths with extended techniques and electronics. Recently, Yaz has been drawn to durational work, club music, sound design, and production-forward songwriting. AFTER, their forthcoming release with PTP (Nov 7), was created during their February/March 2025 music residency at Pioneer Works. Unbound to any rules or limitations on genre, Yaz puts forth a cohesive melding of experimental composition, RnB-tinged pop, noise, “emo ambient,” improvisatory collaborations, and clubby references across 14 tracks. Yaz additionally performs as "death ambient" and hardcore DJ project “medium.” in deep collaboration with creative partner gg200bpm. They find joy in collaboration – Yaz has worked with artists like Andy Akiho, BAKUDI SCREAM, claire rousay, Leilehua Lanzilotti, Lisel, Miss Grit, Nyokabi Kariuki, OHYUNG, and Vines. They occasionally perform live with noise project Centennial Gardens (Dreamcrusher and King Vision Ultra).
