Yelling At Clouds

Yelling At Clouds is the solo project of Australian musician, Paul Luttrell. The moniker, which conjures images of an old man who feels like the world has gotten away from him, provides an insight into the themes and ideas discussed in the song writing of Yelling At Clouds - an element that takes centre stage throughout the debut LP, Shut Up, Cloud! Here we are reminded of the humour-tinged, caustic gibes of The Smiths, Arctic Monkeys and Neutral Milk Hotel (with the latter being a clear influence on the instrumental accompaniment). However, it’s not all fun and games, and between barbs thrown at the perceived vacuity of modern culture, there are moments of earnestness and despair. Paul hails from Hobart, Tasmania, which is important – because not only is it regarded by many of its occupants as the end of the world - its customs and nightlife are the lyrical subject of several songs. Musically, Yelling At Clouds is acoustic based, but softly picked strings often give way to heavy drums and fuzzed out guitars, something that harkens back to the 90s and the productions of Steve Albini and others alike. Vocal harmonies feature prominently and add depth to the sound, while the “quiet-loud” dynamic is employed at times, which adds to the 90s aesthetic. However, Yelling At Clouds is not a nostalgia act, but rather an instance of an artist using his influences as a vehicle to deliver an authentic poetic expression.
