Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet serves as the creative spark for a selection of works by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Bernstein. The evening features Tchaikovsky's emblematic symphonic poem, the first suite from Prokofiev's ballet, and the rhythmic Symphonic Dances from Bernstein's West Side Story. The programme is completed by Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, a contemporary of Prokofiev's work and a profound masterpiece of lamentation.
