such an architect thing to make a family issue into a city-wide issue

Brand New Landscape

Starts off with a terrible Hou Hsiao Hsien riff before threatening to do Hamaguchi-lite with a time skip and late title drop, before settling on being its very own tedious Neo-Ozu film. As if all the cliches of the modern Japanese arthouse have been reheated and served to a non discerning festival going audience. I’m starting to believe the restrained emotions characteristic of these films is less so a reflection of polite Japanese society, with said politeness making this entire thing dramatically inert, and more so a way to avoid confronting the complexity of human interaction in a conscious effort to privilege aesthetics over melodrama (Ozu’s films are so melodramatic!). That is to say you’ll probably have a way more spiritually enriching experience walking around in a Muji store for an hour. Every Director’s Fortnight screening starts with Harmony Korine’s signature lingering on the screen and all I can do is think of this video: Give me something
