A nostalgic big band night.
The Mingus Big Band exclusively performs the works of the legendary American composer, bassist, and activist Charles Mingus. Founded by Sue Mingus, this 14-piece ensemble showcases large-scale arrangements of his compositions, fulfilling Mingus's own vision for his music. The band's structure encourages creative exploration and individual expression, mirroring the spirit of Mingus's original Jazz Workshop projects. Comprised of a rotating cast of New York City's top musicians, the group is renowned for its spontaneous and creative energy. They have received seven Grammy nominations, including a recent one for The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions, and won a Grammy in 2011 for Live at Jazz Standard. Their long-standing Mingus Mondays residency continues at The Pocket.
