Pokey LaFarge has established himself as a unique troubadour, blending various 20th-century American musical styles into his own original sound. His latest work, Rent Money, highlights his skills in social commentary and personal expression, featuring catchy melodies that address contemporary economic struggles and his own reflections on the future. Moving beyond the island-inspired rhythms of his previous album Rhumba Country, his new music incorporates urban blues, rock 'n' roll, jazz, and country funk. Recorded near Chicago with producer Elliot Bergman, the album maintains a simple and direct approach, focusing on authentic performances and a warm, cinematic sound that aims to connect with listeners across societal divides.
