The Toekomst Muziek foundation is an empowerment project that supports young people through music, focusing on beat-making, singing, and rap. It targets youth with unresolved issues and offers a program that centers on their musical talents. Over a period of at least 12 months, participants work on a compilation album, music videos, and a CD release tour, while also developing their social and emotional skills. The project combines music with guidance, helping participants find suitable education or employment, both within the music industry and beyond. Since its founding in 2010 in Amsterdam Southeast, Toekomst Muziek has helped over hundred kids, produced 13 albums, recorded 30 music videos, and organized 38 performances. The foundation aims to reduce risky behavior and provide meaningful leisure activities. Its mission is to empower youth in all areas of life and encourage them to become entrepreneurial, whether in the music industry or elsewhere. Dherl Deekman is the founder of Toekomst Muziek. He moved from Paramaribo to Amsterdam at the age of six and developed a passion for music at a young age, particularly within the hip-hop scene. Alongside his musical activities, Dherl decided to pursue a degree in pedagogy, which eventually led to his combining music with social work. In 2010, he launched the Toekomst Muziek project as part of his thesis for his Pedagogy degree, inspired by his work as a youth counselor. Dherl sees music not just as a tool, but as a powerful medium for personal growth and self-expression. Through music, he helps young people discover their inner strength, address their problems, and grow as individuals. As a pedagogue and social entrepreneur, he envisions Toekomst Muziek growing sustainably, with young people themselves eventually taking over and carrying the project forward. His vision is to help youth carve their own paths, both in music and in other areas of life.
